Using Our Materials

You can use JAXA’s photo and video materials from JAXA Digital Archives in accordance with the procedures and conditions below.

1 Please read the Terms of Use before applying for materials.

  • *Some of the materials can be used without JAXA’s permission.

Please check the Application Classification.

2 Select the materials you wish to use and place them in your cart.

  • *Parts of our website might not work properly if you are not using the recommended browsers.
  • *You will need to consent to our use of cookies when applying online.

3 Click on the cart and tick the materials you are applying for before clicking on Online Application button.

4 Enter and send necessary information from the online application page.

  • *If you are a making direct contact with a JAXA staff member regarding the use of image materials in media or for commercial purposes, please enter the name and department of the staff member in the Purpose of use/contents/context box.

5 You will receive an email notifying you that your online application has been registered.

6 Send us your draft materials.

Draft materials will be used for determining whether or not to grant permission for the use of our image materials. Please email us your near final draft materials which can give us a concrete idea of how our resources will be used (project proposal, script, editorial layout, storyboard, proof copy, etc.).

7 You will receive an email allowing the use of materials, and the data will be made available to you.

  • *The download destination for video materials will be informed to you separately from the JAXA Imagery Service.
  • *You can reuse the image materials that have already been provided to you. In such instances, a separate use application must be completed.

Regarding the images and videos on the JAXA website, please refer to the Site Policy.
For images and videos not in the JAXA Digital Archives, you can make an online application without using the cart.

If you cannot use the online application

  1. This site uses cookies to process online applications. When you make an application, please click “accept” in the pop-up message about the collection of cookies.
  2. Due to the settings on your browser or computer, you may not be able to apply from the “Online Application” screen. In such a case, i) update your browser or apply from another browser, or ii) use another device to make your application.
  3. You have made an online application but have not received a confirmation email that your online application has been registered. The email may have been sent to your spam folder or junk folder depending on the network settings of your computer, security software, or proxy.
    i) Please check if the email is in your spam folder or junk folder. If you find it there, please transfer it to your inbox.
    ii) Please check that emails from the jaxa.jp domain have permission to be received on your email server.

If you still cannot use it after trying 1 to 3, please contact us using the Inquiry Form.

Please observe the following when using JAXA’s photos or video materials.

  1. Terms of Use

    Credit:
    Please clearly indicate “(C) Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)” or “(C)JAXA” as the source. However, if the owner of the material is another organization or if the work is jointly owned by JAXA and other organizations, please indicate each individual source side by side. (example: (C) JAXA/NAOJ).
    Individual precautions:
    If a photo or video has content precautions written in the “Contents” column, please observe them when using the material.

  2. Prohibited matters

    Usage is not allowed for the following purposes. If a case of such use is discovered, we will suspend such use, so we ask for your understanding.

    • To aid, recommend, slander, or defame the activities of a specific individual or group or organization
    • For purposes or situations that are contrary to public order and morals
    • Use in a manner that causes misunderstandings about JAXA’s operations or Japanese aerospace exploration activities.
    • Uses that may cause considerable decline in the organizational image of JAXA or its level of confidence and uses that may infringe upon the rights of a specific individual or organization. (This also includes cases where it appears as if the results presented on this site were presented as an individual achievement or may cause a similar misunderstanding [including academic research papers], so please use caution.)
    • Distributing JAXA’s photos and videos without first obtaining the permission of JAXA
    • Prohibition of alteration:
      Alterations that change the meaning or intent of the material are prohibited.
      (Examples of prohibited alteration: alteration to length and width, change or invert some of the colors, trimming in such a manner as to change the meaning of a photo or video, or inserting it into other material)
      In order to protect individual publicity rights or portrait rights, things about specific persons, such as astronauts, cannot be used freely without the beforehand permission of JAXA in each case, with the exception of use for news reports.

  3. Precautions when using

    • JAXA strives to safeguard personal information in addition to performing suitable management in line with the “Personal Information Protection Policy (Privacy Policy).” Regarding the personal information that we receive, we do not use it for any purposes other than the purpose of JAXA Digital Archives photo and video use applications.
    • JAXA does not make any guarantees regarding the credibility and safety of all registered materials. Also, we shall bear no responsibilities for any damages caused by the use of registered material by a user
    • Works from providers other than JAXA cannot be provided by JAXA.
      When using, please check with each individual provider. (Example: NASA, etc.)
    • If the source of an image or video is NASA, please follow the NASA Guidelines.

    • Regarding the images and videos on the JAXA website, please refer to the Site Policy.

  • An application to JAXA is not necessary. However, in the case of academic study, education, or personal use, in order to protect individual publicity rights or portrait rights, please make an online application for things about specific persons, such as astronauts (excepting news reports).

  • In a case in which an application to JAXA is not necessary but the provision of video data from JAXA is required, please follow the procedure to make an online application.
  • In a case where a user wished to imbed a video on JAXA’s official YouTube channel, an application to JAXA is not necessary, but please add the following as an explanation of the imbedded clip.

  • Publications (such as textbooks, reference books, children’s books, magazines, science magazines, information magazines)
  • Use by JAXA’s partner company (for PR, advertisements)

  • Please make an online application.
  • In a case where the planned content as well as the use of the photos and videos has already been coordinated with JAXA before making an application, please indicate the department and person in charge in the “Purpose of use/Contents” box when making an application.

Cases in which it is judged that the user of the image or video will obtain profits or substantial gains from sales of a product using the material or by other means.

(Examples of usage that require payment)

  • Use in a movie or commercial
  • Use in sales of commodities (including goods for sales promotions)
  • Use in the education activities of private organizations (such as preparatory schools and tutoring schools, but excluding authorized textbooks, entrance examinations, and certification examinations)
