In April 12, 1955, a tiny rocket Pencil was horizontally test-launched at Kokubunji in the suburbs of Tokyo. This was Japan's first step toward its space efforts of today. The Pencil group was led by Prof. Hideo Itokawa, University of Tokyo, the so-called Father of Japanese Rocketry.
